Glossary Terms used in the Compression and Transfer Molding Process
EPDM:
Ethylene propylene diene monomer.
EBONITE:
A hard rubber made by vulcanization of rubber with high levels (greater 30 parts) of sulfur,
where the high hardness is due to the action of the sulfur.
FLATNESS:
The degree to which platens are designed to withstand deflection and maintain parallelism.
FLASH EXTENSION:
The distance flash extends beyond the part (after removal of a tear trim, but before any other
operation to reduce or remove).
FLASH:
The material which flows beyond the part boundaries at the parting lines of the mold, or into openings, housing inserts, ejector pins, etc.
FLOW MARKS, LINES OR CRACKS:
Variants by degree with "cracks" the most severe of surface imperfections caused by imperfect flow of the raw compound during forming.
FORMULATION:
Kinds and proportion of ingredients for a mix, together with the method of incorporation. Also called recipe.
